Wide-leg pants have one job — an unbroken column of fabric from waist to floor. Every fit rule serves that line.
Everything below the waistband swings, so the waistband itself has to hold. High-rise wide legs sit at the natural waist and stay put; the elastic and smocked waists on most YESNO palazzo pants do the same job without a single button. If a wide-leg pant slides down an inch, the crotch drops, the drape breaks, and the whole column collapses — when in doubt between sizes, take the one that grips the waist.

The tell of a wrong length is flapping at the ankle bone: too short reads cropped by accident. Genuinely cropped wide legs are a different garment and announce themselves by ending mid-calf, on purpose.
Volume below wants either contrast or containment above. A fitted rib top, a tucked blouse or a sweater vest over a shirt all mark the waist and let the pants flare from a defined point. The full-boho alternative — loose top over loose pants — works when the top ends at the hip bone or gets a half-tuck; floor-length volume under hip-length volume with no waist anywhere needs real height to carry.
Petite: keep the rise high, the hem long over a modest heel, and pick lighter fabrics that swing rather than stack — the column trick adds visual inches. Tall: you were built for this; the only failure mode is a hem that stops short, so check the inseam number, not the size letter.
